North American Title Insurance Co. (NATIC) has added Gilbert Leigh Curry as its vice president, Midwest regional underwriting counsel, serving agents in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Additionally, Curry will assist as legal counsel for North American Title Co., the affiliated agency operation, in its Chicago office.
Curry most recently served as claims counsel for Stewart Title Guaranty Co. for seven years and as senior vice president and underwriting counsel for Stewart Title Co. of Illinois for five years prior to that. An advocate for the title industry, he was program developer for the Title 101 class for the Illinois Land Title Association’s professional designation courses.
“Leigh has many qualities that make him an excellent addition to our underwriting staff,” said Valerie Jahn-Grandin, executive vice president, NATIC chief underwriting counsel. “First, he is a thoughtful and hands-on underwriting counsel, helping his agents and colleagues in the many jurisdictions he supports. He wants to help the agent get the deal done. However, as a former claims counsel, he knows how to protect the agent as well as NATIC as the underwriter from potential title claims.”
“He also is a great teacher and writer and has already assumed a leading role on the team currently updating the NATIC underwriting manual,” added Jahn-Grandin. “Agents can look forward to hearing from him on future webinars and as a presenter on NATIC’s Title 101 video series currently under development.”
A graduate of the University of Wyoming and the John Marshall Law School, Curry started in the title industry as a recording clerk.
“I learned title insurance and property taxes by being in the Cook County Building every day and asking questions,” said Curry. “I’ve also had the benefit of working with a variety of amazing title professionals, learning from their experiences over the years.”
Curry credits the opportunity to be part of one of the fastest-growing underwriters in the United States as the major factor in moving to NATIC. His office is located at 180 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 2220, Chicago, IL 60601, telephone number (312) 658-1008.
